It’s hard for a non-surfer to understand a surfer’s connection to waves. For just a few seconds of glory and sometimes not even that; surfers will travel far, endure harsh conditions, and even put themselves in dangerous situations. While everyday surfers like me can relate to - and even envy - these brave souls, my surfing journey is not quite so dramatic. 

I’ve surfed my whole life but prioritized career, marriage, and family. Surfing a week here and there for most of my adult life limited my progression. As the years passed I dreamt of one day owning a home near a consistent surf break and sharing my passion with non-surfing family and friends. I’ve learned, however, that if you’re not a surfer you’re less willing to spend large periods of time in a remote place with few options beyond surfing.

After years of leaving my loved ones behind for surf trips, I concluded that in order to fulfill my love for surf, family and friends, I would need to find waves in a place where non-surfers could also find happiness. That’s when I discovered Portugal and more specifically, Ericeira. 

Europe’s first World Surfing Reserve is a playground for surfers and non-surfers alike. Ericeira is a charming village just 35 minutes north of another world class destination - Lisbon. A surfer can enjoy a variety of consistent breaks all within steps, a short bike ride, or an even shorter car trip and then choose between a casual evening in the village or a night out in Lisbon. And when the ocean decides to make lemons, you can still enjoy lemonade by taking in the countless sights, sounds, and tastes on offer and all within your reach.

In between Ericeira and Lisbon are wineries, castles, quaint shops, one of a kind restaurants, and endless vistas up and down the pristine Portuguese coastline to be experienced.
